The question on many people’s lips is do I need a D1 licence to drive a minibus, or can I drive a minibus on a standard car licence? In this handy guide, we will explore the ins and outs of the D1 licence, including what it is, what minibuses you can drive with a D1 category and those on a standard licence.
What is a D1 Licence?
A D1 licence is a specific category of driving licence in the UK that allows the holder to drive a minibus. If you are one of the lucky ones who have passed their driving test before the 1st January 1997, the D1 category is automatically added to your licence, meaning you can drive a minibus with 16 passenger seats weighing over 3.5 tonnes but under 7.5 tonnes and is not being used for hire and reward. Those not familiar with the term hire or reward, it simply means transporting goods and passengers in exchange for payment. There are some other requirements that we will go into in more detail.
If you have passed your driving test on or after 1st January 1997, you will have to undergo passenger-carrying vehicle (PCV) training to obtain the D1 status and drive a minibus over 3.5 tonnes. Similar to a standard car licence, the PCV training requires you to take both a theory and practical test. You must also pass a medical to ensure you are fit and able to drive a minibus. How long does a D1 licence last?
Don’t worry, once you have completed the D1 category training, the renewal process is straightforward. A D1 licence is required to be renewed every 3 years, and the process can be kickstarted up to 90 days prior. This can be completed online, by post, or at you nearest Post Office branch, all that is required is proof of identity and address as well as your current driving licence number. It is important to make sure that you check the current expiry date of your D1 licence, as failure to do so can result in a fine of up to £1,000 by the DVLA.
What Minibuses Can I Drive on a Standard Car Licence?
While acquiring a D1 licence gives you the freedom to drive all our minibus models, permitting it does not exceed the weight and size restrictions, you can however drive a minibus on a standard car licence if certain regulations are followed. Similar to a D1 licence, you cannot operate a minibus on a standard car licence for hire and reward purposes. In addition to this, the vehicle cannot weigh more than 3.5 tonnes, and you must be aged 21 or over and have held your licence for at least 2 years.

What Minibuses Can I Drive with a D1 Licence?
With a D1 licence, you are allowed to drive any minibus that meets a set list of criteria. These include, the minibus you are driving can have no more than 16 passengers on board, is not longer than 8 meters in length and a tow trailer does not exceed 750kg.
