Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a D1 licence to drive a minibus?
Depending on which minibus you are looking to buy or lease, you may need a D1 category licence to drive a minibus. Minibuses that weigh more than 3.5 tonnes and carry up to 16 passengers require a D1 licence. If you passed your car driving test before 1st January 1997, then the D1 status is automatically added to your licence. For those that have passed their car driving test on or after 1st January 1997 they will be required to undergo PCV (passenger-carrying vehicle) training. For more information on how to add categories to your licence, visit government website.
If you hold a D1 licence then you will be able to drive the 17-seater Ford Transit Minibus, available at The Minibus Centre.
Can I drive a minibus on a standard car licence?
At The Minibus Centre, there are minibuses for sale that do not require a D1 licence. Minibuses that weigh under 3.5 tonnes and hold a maximum 16 passengers can be driven on a standard car licence, permitting you are over the age of 21 and have held your licence for at least 2 years. This means you can buy or lease our road ready models like the FlexiLite, Ford Tourneo Custom, and Ford Tourneo Independence PTS, for your care home.
What permits will I have to apply for to drive a minibus?
You should seek independent legal advice on wether your organisation requires and/or would qualify for a Section 19 or 22 permit in order to drive a minibus. Each case is considered on their own merits as every business has their own unique set of circumstances. We recommend you visit the government website for more information or download the following document from the Department of Transport here.
